Transitioning my Closet from Summer to Fall!

As cooler weather is (hopefully) approaching, it’s time to transition your closet for the season ahead! Although you may have a few weeks left in the heat, I like to get my closet transition out of the way before the busy fall season kicks in. The summer to fall wardrobe shift is arguably the most dramatic… It’s time to pack away lighter summer clothing and bring out warmer, cozier fall pieces. I love using this closet transition to reassess my wardrobe, declutter, and identify any new items I might need for the fall season! As I gear up for my own closet transition in the coming weeks, I wanted to share my tried & true process for shifting your closet between seasons!

START FROM SCRATCH

I always begin by pulling everything out of my closet. It seems daunting and overwhelming, but a clean slate is crucial… and it has to get worse before it can get better! Be intentional as you remove items and sort through the items you need to donate, replace, etc.! I use this process to identify holes in my closet and donate items I’m unlikely to wear again. With end-of-season sales approaching, it helps me identify what to purchase and frees up space to store new items.

PREP YOUR DESIGNATED STORAGE AREA

As you sift through your wardrobe, find a designated space in your home that can be used to store summer clothing. I usually use a guest room closet or a dedicated storage closet (organizing tips HERE). When it comes to storing these out-of-season items, The Container Store has a multitude of options. I prefer clear storage bins, especially those that fit under the bed. If your bins aren’t clear, labeling makes items easily accessible and sets you up for success for spring transition. Once summer clothes are stored, you’ve created space for your fall wardrobe!

ORGANIZING… KEEP YOUR MOST USED PIECES WITHIN REACH

I might be stating the obvious, but I recommend keeping your most frequently worn/used items in mind when arranging your closet. You can best utilize your available closet space by storing less frequently worn items out of the way. This frees up prime real estate for your most worn items where they should be… front, center, and within reach. This makes it easier to find and access what you need, streamlining your daily routine.

HANGING WARDROBE PIECES… SORTED BY LIFESTYLE

Everyone has their own way of organizing hanging clothes. Sorting by lifestyle/category has proven to be the most effective system for me. Keeping like items in the same area allows me to have a better general idea of where specific items can be found. By grouping items into sections (sweaters, blouses, dresses, etc.,) I can go straight to the section I need without having to search! I also group by color within each section. For added ease and clarity, I label each section using closet rod organizers

UTILIZE ORGANIZATION TOOLS

Regardless of the size of your closet, there are ways to utilize every inch and make the most of your available space! The Container Store offers a huge selection of organizational tools that will help you create additional space and organization in your closet. TIFFY’S TIPS

  • If your closet space is limited, check out this ‘Small Space Closet Solutions’ list from The Container Store
  • This rolling garment rack makes a much easier closet transition. You can hang and store out-of-season items, or even store items you may continue wearing during the fall transition weather.
  • We keep two of these boxes under our hanging clothes. One is used to store sweaters and the other is used to store extra hangers.
  • Speaking of hangers, I love the visual appeal of matching hangers. This brand has been my favorite for years, and I love adding these clips
  • These hangers are by far the best for hanging coats and suits. Extremely sturdy and keeps the shape of the coat so well.
  • I’ve found hanging my boots saves so much closet space. These clips are a sturdy and easy way to store your boots together.
  • No extra hanging space? Add these inserts to your boots to keep them in their upright position, minimize bending, and keep your boots in great shape!
  • A cedar hang-up is a great way to keep unwanted visitors (pests, moths, etc.,) away from your clothing!
  • My daughter uses these clear drawer dividers and loves them! Allows her to make the most out of her drawer space.
