The Perfect Addition to a 4th of July Celebration

Independence day is quickly approaching, and in my opinion nothing screams the 4th of July quite like a good old fashioned Cheeseburger! Hamburgers and Cheeseburgers are such an easy recipe to prepare, which is why it’s one of my go-to hosting recipes throughout the summer. This Cheeseburger recipe is always such a hit with guests… the juicy patty, toasted bun, and tantalizing toppings is just hard to beat!
When hosting a group I like to take this classic cheeseburger recipe one step further with a “Burger Bar”… a display of fixings including sauces, cheeses, and toppings. This spread is fun, easy and allows guests to create the summer burger of their dreams. Psssst… if you really want to wow your guests, I recommend using double beef patties and two slices of cheese. Elevate your 4th of July celebration with a burger bar that will leave guests wanting more!

Arranging A Burger Bar
Build your own cheeseburger bar piggybacks off of the idea that topping preferences are very rarely ‘one size fits all’. For instance, my daughter’s idea of the perfect cheeseburger includes four toppings… red onion, dill pickles, lettuce, and ketchup. My perfect cheeseburger includes well over six (plus) different toppings and every condiment in sight, LOL! Creating a ‘build your own burger bar’ offers your guests the resources and freedom to create their version of the perfect burger. I recommend having all toppings displayed on a bar, side table, or table for your guests to choose from. I love using a condiment serving tray and mini tongs for ease. Below I’ve listed a few items as inspiration for your burger bar!
Cheeses
Swiss, cheddar, pepper jack, goat cheese, blue cheese
Toppings
lettuce, tomato, onion (red and/or caramelized), pickles, avocado, bacon, jalapeño, grilled pineapple, sautéed mushrooms, grilled veggies, fried egg
Condiments
ketchup, yellow mustard, dijon mustard, mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, ranch
The Best Cheeseburger Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- Kosher salt and coarse ground black pepper to taste
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- melted butter
- 4 brioche hamburger buns, split
- Toppings: Shredded iceberg lettuce, tomato slices, red onion slices, dill pickle slices, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup
Instructions
- Shape the beef into 4 equal patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper, to taste.
- Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to 400°F and lightly oil the grates with olive oil. Grill the burgers, turning once, until they reach your desired internal temperature. During the last minute of cooking, top each patty with cheese and allow it to melt.
- While the burgers finish cooking, brush the cut sides of the buns with butter and place them on the grill until lightly toasted. Transfer the burgers to the bottom half of each bun, add your favorite toppings, and enjoy!
Notes
- I prefer 80/20 ground beef for the perfect balance of flavor and juiciness. If you’re looking for a leaner burger, choose 90/10 or 93/7, but keep in mind that less fat can mean a slightly drier burger. More fat equals more flavor and a more tender, juicy bite!
- The last thing you want is a dry hamburger… be careful not to overcook! Make sure you use a meat thermometer for the perfect internal temperature.
- I love cheddar cheese on my burger but add your favorite. So many options… pepper jack, American, brie, havarti, blue cheese, gouda, Swiss or goat…YUM!!!
- While the grill is hot, cook onions, bell pepper, poblano peppers to add a different depth and flavor profile to your burger.
- Let’s talk about buns as the selections are endless! Ciabatta roll, kaiser roll, onion roll, potato roll, pretzel roll, sesame seed, and gluten free. All buns have my vote but brioche is my VERY favorite!
- I usually keep it simple with kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper, but a great burger seasoning is always welcome! Try Kinder’s The Blend or McCormick Grill Mates Hamburger Seasoning for an easy boost of flavor.
